Clearing the written exam of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and being recommended by the Services Selection Board (SSB) itself is an enormous success in itself. But clearing the entrance test does not end the journey for you. After crossing the threshold of Khadakwasla, Pune awaits an experience that will transform you from a mere schoolboy to an officer of the indian armed forces. The knowledge about the real experiences at the NDA will be your greatest motivator.
Those students aspiring to get professional assistance can find it in NDA Coaching. This will help them in preparing for the NDA.
Right from the first day, life at NDA takes a turn from personal responsibilities to communal discipline. As a candidate at NDA, you become a cadet in one of the 18 Squadrons in five Battalions. This squadron is going to be your family, your home, and your team for the next three years.
The first few weeks will see you getting oriented into military life, where you learn time management, precise drill, and absolute squad loyalty.
Routine forms the very foundation of the Khadakwasla training process. The daily routine of a cadet is very well planned in order to develop mental toughness, physical fitness, and academic learning.
Morning Session (04:30 AM – 08:00 AM): The day starts early in the morning with PT or drill classes. Cadets engage themselves in activities that include endurance runs, obstacle courses, and parade drills.
Forenoon Session (08:30 AM – 01:30 PM): The forenoon session revolves around academics. Cadets work on getting a bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.Sc., or B.Tech) from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Afternoon (02:00 PM – 05:00 PM): Games and outdoor activities. All cadets engage in sports including football, basketball, cross-country, equitation (horse riding), or any other water sport in order to foster teamwork and mental toughness.
Evening (06:00 PM – 09:30 PM): Reserved study hours (Mandatory Study Period), personal upkeep, squadron meetings, and dinner at the Cadet Mess, which is the largest mess hall in all of Asia.
Character development is the ultimate aim of NDA besides physical fitness.
Jointness: What makes NDA special is the presence of a joint service academy where cadets from all three services study together. The relationships forged here create a lasting camaraderie between the services.
Camaraderie and “Ragging” (Militaristic Culture): The dynamics of senior-junior relationships involve mentoring and motivation and the handing down of traditions. Cadets learn to protect their fellow cadets and work towards collective victory.
Honor Code: Honesty and integrity form essential values that all cadets must possess.
Every semester ends with field camps that assess the cadets' ability to utilize their tactical training and survival skills in difficult conditions:
Greenhorn Camp: Exposes junior cadets to map reading, field craft, and outdoor survival techniques.
Rover Camp: Emphasizes navigation skills, night marches, and tactical patrols.
Torna Camp: The final and toughest camp that tests leadership abilities and endurance skills, among others.
The Honor Code & Ethics: There is a strict Honor Code which requires the highest level of integrity, honesty, and discipline. Any kind of unethical conduct or cheating will face harsh punishment, which proves that one’s character is as important as skills.
Inter-Squadron Competitions (The Championship Trophy): Competition spirit among squadrons motivates the cadets. Competitions in cross-country races, debating matches, drill competitions, and sports teams contribute towards earning points for the prestigious Inter-Squadron Championship Trophy.
Cadets’ Mess: Being the world’s largest dining room, eating there alone is an experience. In addition to regular meals, the cadets get involved in formal dinner parties where they practice etiquette and protocol of dining and hospitality.
Clubs & Hobbies: It is recommended to develop interests outside the military domain through club activities. There are many clubs that include archery, yachting, rock climbing, photography, music, dramatics, robotics, and many more.
The Passing Out Parade (POP): The end of the rigorous training takes place at the famous Khetarpal Parade Grounds. The Passing Out Parade is an event that features the flypast of Air Force fighter planes and is followed by the "Passing Off" over the Antim Pag (Final Step), which symbolizes the passage of the cadet to that of a gentleman cadet.
Specialized Training Schools: Graduation from the National Defense Academy does not imply getting commissioned. The cadets now go to their particular academies for specialized training for a period of one year:
Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun for Army Cadets
Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala for Navy Cadets
Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal for Air Force Cadets
Getting Commissioned as an Officer: At the end of the specialized academy for a period of one year, cadets are commissioned as officers (Lieutenant in the Army, Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy, or Flying Officer in the Air Force).
